The French Room in Dallas receives AAA Five Diamond Award for 2011
AAA has recently awarded 179 establishments the AAA/CAA Five Diamond
Award® for 2011. The AAA award listing accounts for only 0.3 percent
of the total 59,000 AAA listed lodgings and restaurants that receive the
prestigious honor. “It is encouraging to see an increase in the number
of AAA Five Diamond establishments this year,” said Michael Petrone,
director of AAA Tourism Information Development. “The recent economic
downturn has presented many challenges for the travel industry including
increased closures and fewer new restaurant openings."

Chef Jason Weaver of The French Room
Congratulations go to The
French Room restaurant located in The Adolphus in Dallas and featured
here at Southpoint.
The
Adolphus Hotel
The
Adolphus is a museum unto itself, and includes a rare 1893 Steinway
piano which was destined for the R.M.S. Titanic. The piano was owned by
the millionaire Benjamin Guggenheim, who died after refusing to get into
one of the few available lifeboats just before the Titanic sank in 1912.

Willie's Place at Carl's Corner, Texas
While on a return business trip from Dallas, we stopped in at Willie's
Place at Carl's Corner. Even though Willie Nelson has gotten in
trouble with the law with a weed possession, by the looks of Willie's
Place he appears to be doing well with his Cafe/Saloon/Restaurant/Bio
Fuel Station. Entertainers play at the Saloon often. Check them out on Twitter.
A
fun and entertaining stop between Dallas and Waco for country music fans
and travelers alike.
The only thing that would make it an all around
experience for those that travel through would be to open an RV Resort
with cabins next door....
The
Blue Skies Cafe offers a wide selection of tasty dishes. Photos,
posters, awards, and Willie memorabilia line the walls. The Whiskey
River Saloon offers nightly entertainment. You may just see Willie make
an appearance.

New Restaurant Opens Near Historic Jackson, Ms. Hotel
The Parlor
Market has opened in downtown Jackson next to the historic King
Edward Hotel (which has opened as the Hilton
Garden Inn). According to Craig Noone, the chef and restaurant
owner, "I've always dreamed of opening a restaurant." Noone grew up in
Jackson, moved away, and came back when he saw the potential for a
restaurant near the hotel. The restaurant's name derives from the Parlor
Market Grocery Store that thrived here back in the 1920s. The standard
fare of the Parlor
Market is local Southern meals made from scratch, including even
moon pies, plus an oyster bar.
Growing up in Jackson, I'm glad to see
the downtown area getting revitalized.
Reserve
a table at the Parlor Market and other area restaurants.

Top 10 places to eat in Austin
|
Just in time for SXSW, here are some must visit restaurants for the
out-of-towner that I have put together to get a taste of the real
flavor, history, and uniqueness that is Austin. Keeping this list short is a challenge, as there are so many. Here are a select few that have been around a long time, have great food, and lots of memorabilia to add to the atmosphere. A city like no other, the live music capital that is Austin offers some real noteworthy eats that have stood the test of time: |
|
1. Hula Hut, 3825 Lake Austin Blvd., Austin - menu
- A festive blend of Polynesian and Mexican fare along the shores of
Lake Austin. Their Grilled Fresh Fish Tacos are a must while enjoying a
laid back atmosphere with surf boards and dinghys hanging from the
ceiling.
2. Kerbey Lane Cafe, four locations -menu
- Have a hankering for breakfast or a burger at 3 a.m.? This 24 hour
cafe offers this and more. My menu favorite is Carl's Breakfast...
3.
Threadgill's - 6416 North Lamar and 301 West Riverside Drive - menu
- Down home Southern cooking and live music. Visit their original
location at North Lamar which opened their doors in 1933 as a filling
station and grew to become the first uniquely Austin restaurant. Janis
Joplin was first discovered here as she waited on tables and sang.
4.
Iron Works BBQ, 100 Red River St., Austin - menu
- The Texas ribs and brisket are succulent. It is said that Jay Leno has
Fed Ex orders from here regularly. You may just see a famous person in
the line.
5. Stubb's Bar-B-Q, 801 Red River St., Austin - menu
- Home of great Texas barbecue and famous Stubb's BBQ sauce, with live
music and a Sunday gospel brunch.
6. Hill's Cafe, 4700 S.
Congress Ave., Austin - menu
- Great Texas brisket, steaks, and free live entertainment Tuesdays and
weekends. Founded by the C.W. Goodnight family (founder of the
chuckwagon).
7. Scholz Garten, 1607 San Jacinto, Austin - menu
- Heralded as the oldest business in Texas right here in Austin. Popular
Texas dishes with a German twist. An interesting factoid: the owner's
brother played the role of Sgt. Carter in the Hogan's Heroes TV show.
8.
Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill, 303 Red River St., Austin - menu
- Housed in the 2nd oldest house in the city (1840s), top rated buffet
and Sunday brunch.
9. Mother's Cafe & Garden, 4215
Duval St., Austin -menu
- This vegetarian favorite is back.
10. Chuy's, five
locations - menu - Visit
their first location at Barton Springs near Zilker Park. Tex-Mex with a
heavy decoration of Elvis and Americana.
My all-time personal
favorite place for chicken quesadillas and margaritas.
Some
honorable mentions for Quick Bites:
Dirty Martin's Place,
2808 Guadalupe St., Austin - menu
- Serving famous "kum bak" fresh burgers, onion rings, fries, and shakes
since 1926,
Nau's Enfield Drugstore, 1115 West Lynn,
Austin - menu -
Providing a unique soda fountain experience since 1951. Try out their
chocolate malt with a hamburger as you swing around in their orange
swivel seats.
Avenue B Grocery, 4403 Ave. B, Austin - menu - Located in an old grocery store, get a sandwich, pick up an original Dr. Pepper (made with Imperial Pure Cane Sugar in Dublin, Texas).
We could go on and on about our hometown's great places to eat. There are many more...

Saying Goodbye to a New York City Landmark
For those who have traveled to New York City, a stop at the artist lined
walls of Tavern on the Green has been a must see. The famed restaurant
began serving customers back in 1934. The building itself goes back to
1870 and is a perfect example of architecture from that era. Up until
1934 it housed a shephard who had a shearing business for his 200 sheep
(believe it or not). The restaurant has impressed many patrons over the
years with opulent chandeliers, artwork, and interesting dishes. Read
more about in this WSJ
article.

Galveston Restaurant Focus: Sonny's Place
Known by Galveston locals for ages, Sonny's Place has reopened on
the island, offering signature burgers, sandwiches, and seafood
favorites. "Pappa" Puccetti opened Sonny's for business in 1944 and
"Junior" Puccetti has held the reins now for almost 60 years.
Yes,
it's a bar and grill and the surroundings are nothing you would call
fancy by any stretch, but Sonny's Place is family friendly and pleases
the pallete with popular dishes like Grandma Theresa's spaghetti,
muffuletta, fried shrimp, or cheeseburgers. The walls are lined with
memorabilia of Galveston's history and is the place for delicious food
and to mingle with local islanders to find out what's going on.
Sonny's
Place is open Tuesday thru Thursday from 11am-2pm & 5pm-9:30pm and
Friday & Saturday from 11am-2pm & 5pm-11pm.
Cash or check
only.

Houston Restaurant Focus: Cullen's Upscale American Grille
To say that the new Cullen's restaurant is massive is an understatement.
At just under 40,000 square feet, Cullen's near Clear Lake offers an
upscale American dining experience indoors or outdoors, with bar,
billiards room, and live entertainment all under one roof. The cozy
decor is tastefully appointed with dark wood and casino style
surroundings.
Since opening in 2008, Cullen's has continued to expand their menu
selections, ranging from steaks, chicken, seafood, subs or pizza. The
menu includes a large wine list that includes over 100 Texas wines. For
special events, there is a circular ballroom that can accomodate up to
200 guests.
Cullen's, 11500 Space Center Blvd., Houston, TX 77059
Cullen's
is open 7 days a week.
