Feature Accommodations - Grace Manor Bed & Breakfast
Galveston, Texas

by Carl Burnham
Built in 1905 by George B. Stowe, for John D. Hodson, an insurance executive, the Grace Manor house is a late Victorian Colonial Revival style, with large rooms, king size beds, period antiques, paintings, and ornate furniture. The entrance is draped with huge dark pink boganvilla, the tallest I've ever seen, in addition to crape myrtles, and majestic palm trees which shade the front porch.

Each of the four guest rooms are appointed with king sized beds and richly detailed with antiques. Bathrooms include either a Jacuzzi or claw-footed tub. Our room, the Island Palm, included a spacious room with a day bed, and walk through sliding glass windows, allowing us to walk out on the upper porch veranda to overlook the front garden area and Postoffice Street (also known as Avenue E). The house is appointed with central air and heat. Prior to air conditioning, residents would sleep out on their porches on the south-side, and the sliding windows are found in many of the area houses. Our bathroom included a shower and a huge 7-foot claw-footed tub, with a rack for enjoying your favorite book while relaxing.

The statue at the foot of the stairs is original to the house, and dates to 1860. The entrance door and a side door have dramatic stained glass detail. The Grace Manor includes the first private elevator installed on the island, which is still operational today. Several rooms have wood floors with intricate inlaid parquet.

Breakfast consisted of pineapple with ham banana nut bread with homemade fig preserves, while soft music played in the background. This was followed by a breakfast casserole and fresh fruit. A surprise was our water, which had ice with frozen fruit inside. A fresh baked pear dessert with strawberries and chocolate topped off a delicious way to start the day.
